Microsoft recently announced the Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) technology, which leverages the power of Neural Processing Units (NPUs) to enhance image quality. These NPUs, focused on AI workloads, are expected to bring multiple benefits. Unlike traditional external sources like graphics cards, Auto SR represents the first OS-level enhancement technology.
Integration with Modern Hardware
Auto SR utilizes AI chips found in new-generation processors such as Snapdragon X Elite, Ryzen AI 300 Series, and Core Ultra 200V Series, rather than GPUs. These AI units are becoming standard, and users are expected to see their benefits in various applications.
Initially, this feature will be available with Microsoft’s Copilot+ certified AI PCs, leading to limited adoption initially. However, Microsoft plans to expand support to include Lunar Lake chips and more.
What is Auto SR?
Auto SR is distinct from other upscaling technologies like DLSS, FSR, and XeSS, which integrate directly into games. Auto SR enhances visual details and frame rates in real-time for existing games, offering a balance beyond what PC hardware alone can achieve. The technology relies on the embedded NPU units for image enhancement, coordinated through the operating system to adjust desktop resolution, improving performance without manual intervention.
Operation and Benefits
Auto SR’s AI model, trained on game data, operates on the NPU to upscale images rendered at lower resolutions, such as 720p, to achieve quality exceeding natural 1080p. This reduces the load on the GPU, allowing for faster frame rendering and overall energy efficiency. The technology ensures enhanced game visuals while maintaining high frame rates, crucial for an immersive gaming experience.
How to Enable Auto SR
Enabling Auto SR is simple. Users need to go to Windows Settings, navigate to System > Display > Graphics, and activate the Automatic Super Resolution feature. It will automatically enhance compatible games without needing additional settings adjustments.
Supported Games and Future Plans
Currently, Auto SR supports 11 games, including BeamNG.drive, Borderlands 3, Control (DX11), Dark Souls III, God of War, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2, and The Witcher 3. Microsoft plans to expand this list and support broader hardware in the future.
System Requirements
To use Auto SR, the following are required:
- A Copilot+ PC with Snapdragon X Series processors featuring Hexagon NPU and integrated GPU
- Windows 11 version 24H2 or above
- Latest graphics and neural processor drivers
- Display resolution of 1080p or higher
- Latest Auto Super Resolution Package
Microsoft’s Auto SR is set to revolutionize gaming by leveraging AI to deliver enhanced visuals and performance. As support expands, this technology will likely become a staple in the gaming experience, offering significant benefits even to users with less powerful hardware.
